I recently watched both the 1994 and 2019 Little Women versions…and there’s a verdict.
Ever since the 2019 version came out, there’s been a lot of controversy.
Why people don’t like the 2019 version
The biggest argument people have against the 2019 version is that it time-jumps back-and-forth between past and present, which can be very confusing.
I will admit that I was confused myself when I first saw it in theatres! However, when I just watched it again, it completely clicked for me, and now it makes so much sense.
When it’s in the present, it has a blue cast. When it’s in the past, it’s a warm cast. Greta Gerwig actually did an amazing job, in my opinion, because every flash-back alines with a present scene. I thought it was done really tastefully and uniquely. But I know a lot of people don’t agree with me.
What I didn’t like about the 1994 version
I didn’t like Meg or Beth in this version, and I didn’t like the older Amy. Also you can’t beat high-resolution television, haha.
Also…this is the worst problem in my opinion: WHY IS PROFESSOR BHAER SO OLD?!
This actually made me very disturbed. It also disturbed everyone else in my family.
Another thing, Laurie and Amy’s relationship felt awkward and sudden in the 1994 version, which was also very annoying.
What I didn’t like about the 2019 version
Basically my only things were very minor about the actors. I loved all of the actors, except it was very confusing for my brain because Emma Watson is permanently Hermione Granger in my brain 🤣. And Timothée Chalamet is a bit too scrawny to realistically be Laurie, but again, these are very minor things.
What I liked about the 1994 version
I liked Jo in this movie, and I also loved Laurie…but only when he was younger.
What I liked about the 2019 version
I loved Beth in this movie, and I also am obsessed with Florence Pugh’s rendition of Amy. A lot of people I know felt like it was awkward and confusing that she played both the younger and older versions of Amy, but I personally thought she did an amazing job and she was hilarious as younger Amy. There was a lot more about Jo’s writing in this version, which was much more realistic.
Also…I just loved the movie. I really loved the unique way Greta Gerwig created this adaption.
Thank you all for being here, and thank you for reading! :D
Which is your favourite Little Women version? I’d love to hear!
I never watched the 1994 version, but the 2019 movie has been one of my favorites for a while. I just watched the 2018 modern rendition the other day, so it's funny that you posted about these two😂.
I always get so upset when Jo rejects Laurie! I understand that they are too similar and too headstrong for each other but, they were such great friends💔 and Laurie marrying Amy of all people just sent me over the edge when I first read the book🤣. Little Women was the first(and only) book I read that had me actually angry for a full 24 hours after finishing.
Aside from my frustration, it is still one of my favorite and most cherished books.
Actually, I've not seen either movie, but as a homeschooler, of course I read the books. The cracked-brain crazy part about it is that when I read about the professor, I thought he *was* that old so that the picture you shared actually mirrored what I read. Maybe it implies that somewhere?
