I'm planning to work on an ongoing novel WIP that has recently taken the backseat & that I'd like to get back into some focused work on. I've been putting off some important brainstorming all month that I need to do before I keep writing in earnest, so October will be the perfect time to prep! In April I did Camp Nanowrimo and wrote 10k words, so I'll probably attempt something similar in November.

Hello Eowyn,

My current idea is about a friendship that develops between two soldiers who are on opposite sides in a war between their kingdoms. After the war the older one takes the younger one under his wing and helps him navigate the post war intrigue. It's sort of a costume drama in the vein of stendhal but set in a fantasy world.

Ooh…I love that! Are you going to base the war off of an actual war? Or is it going to be entirely original?

It sounds really good already! I love unlikely friendship stories 😁

It's basically going to be a fantasy version of the Napoleonic wars. Specifically focusing on the Waterloo equivalent and the intrigue that comes from the various governments trying to root out partisans from the losing side. The younger soldier fought for the fantasy Napoleon whose character I have yet to develop and his older friends trying to keep him out of trouble with all the "witch hunts" going on.

Hoi, Caleb! Definitely don’t know you 😂

I’ll actually be starting with an already-in-progress draft too. So for this you basically have two options:

- add 50k words to your current draft

- rewrite/edit what you already have (if you have less than 50k words originally you can write the rest of the draft until you have 50k total)

I’ll be taking the 2nd route, because when I originally wrote my draft it was just a fantasy, now I’m adding in sci-fi 😍😱(so excited!!!!).

So then what would you do for the “creating an idea” part? I would just treat it like the plotting week. I mean, when I have an idea I instantly go to an outline so I won’t forget it but it will still be writable. I don’t think it’s possible to plot too much!

In the anthology you said you were a plantser. Me too! The way I work with that is I try to make a super detailed plot/outline but I don’t necessarily stick to it. I definitely need it, though, because writers block comes from not knowing what to write next. But if you have an outline, you will always know what comes next!

No joke, at least 40k of my NaNo draft from last year I owe to The Most Dangerous Writing App (hardcore mode only tho!!!). It’s absolutely amazing.

Hopefully this helped! I would love to answer any more questions if you have any! And obviously if you need any clarification too. Keep writing!! ✍️
